A new horror movie has been released in the India called- Dies Irae. India’s best horror movie can be different for everyone. But when I watched Bhoothakaalam, I had never seen such a movie anywhere in the world. It was real horror — not something you see with your eyes, but something you feel in your mind. It showed what a real ghost might look like. After that, the same director made Bramayugam, a movie released in black and white in 2024. When I saw it, I understood why there were no colors used in it. If this movie had been sent to the Oscars, it could easily have been in the top five.

Overview
Now, the same director, Rahul Sadasivan, has come back with his third movie called Dies Irae. This Dies Irae movie has the same kind of fear as Bhoothakaalam and the same suspense as Bramayugam — both mixed in one. The title itself sounds like it can’t be from an Indian movie, and you’re right. From any angle, Dies Irae movie doesn’t feel like an Indian film. The words Dies Irae are used during funerals and mean “Day of Judgment,” the day when God brings a dead person back to life and decides whether they go to heaven or hell.
This Dies Irae is a pure horror movie, not overdone, but very real. You probably haven’t felt this kind of fear even in Hollywood movies for a long time. Especially the middle part of the movie — the interval scene — is so scary that people who live alone should not watch it. After that scene, you might not feel safe staying alone anymore.

You’ll even be afraid to look at the walls because you’ll see shadows that could belong to anyone. There’s also a warning for people who can’t handle blood because there’s a scene where a person’s body is twisted in such a disturbing way that it’s hard to imagine how the cameraman even filmed it. It’s scarier than the famous horror scene from the movie Hereditary.
The story of Dies Irae movie is about a rich architect who builds houses for others but lives alone in his own house. His life is all about parties, drinking, and girls. But one day, he hears about a suicide case — a girl found dead inside a well. When her body was taken out, it was already rotting. He couldn’t understand how anyone could do that to themselves. From that day, he starts feeling like he is not alone in his big house. Someone else is living there with him without his permission.

To find out what’s happening, he meets a man who has been able to see strange things since childhood, things that normal people would be too scared to even think about. But these two men are not the main characters. In fact, no human is. The real main character is something that wears anklets that make a jingling sound. Without it, the story wouldn’t exist.
Now the question is — can two ordinary people fight something that they can’t see and can’t hide from? And why is this happening to the architect? Is he hiding something that’s making the darkness follow him?

The climax of this Dies Irae movie is so shocking that it feels like something is moving inside your body. It’s disgusting, disturbing, and really scary. And yes, it’s based on a real story. Just before “The End” appears on the screen, there’s a scene so intense that it feels like your heart stops for a moment. It’s an unbelievable piece of imagination. It really feels like the director went through something terrifying in his childhood, which is why he can make such scary films.
The background music and sound effects are also perfect — every sound matches the scene and makes it more frightening. The night scenes are especially terrifying. Pranav Mohanlal’s acting is amazing. Sometimes you’ll suspect him, sometimes you’ll feel sorry for him, and when you see him scared, you’ll feel scared too.

Movies like this should be made more often. Horror should have a new meaning. The acting, story, climax, and direction are all excellent. The only small complaint is that the ghost scenes could have been a little more, like in Bhoothakaalam. The movie focuses more on suspense and twists than on jump scares.
You should definitely watch this Dies Irae movie, but never watch it alone. If you want to take that risk, it’s your choice. Just take care of yourself afterward.
